Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” (James 4:13-15 NASB)
Denise recently commented on how hard it has been to live in the present. Typically she is in the moment and I am forward looking (while trying not to repeat mistakes of the past). I think it is part of our nature to anticipate the new things ahead. However, we do not know what tomorrow will bring. I believe while God gives an excitement and anticipation for the things He has called us into, He also wants us to be fully engage in His work today.
We were recently reminded of the importance of being engaged in each moment through our Daughter. Abreena recently had a school assembly. The speaker had been disabled & confined to a wheelchair after being involved in a car accident after drinking heavily one night. Shortly before coming out of a coma, with his family and friends thinking he would not survive, he remembered having a dream and hearing God say that it was not his time. A friend sitting beside Abreena began to cry. After the presentation was over the friend looks at Abreena and says, “It was Him”. Abreena had been teaching the friend that God cares for her and desires to speak into her life after the girl had mentioned that she had a dream where she thought God was speaking to her, but she wasn’t convinced it was Him. Abreena encouraged her friend to talk to the presenter. The friend asked the presenter about his dream. She also told him about her dream. The guy said, “Yeah, as I heard myself say that part today I started to wonder if I really had heard God say that”. He started to wonder if he had been lying to people unintentionally. However, because Abreena and her friend came and shared what they had been discussing he was encouraged that he really had experienced God during that time. Two people left encouraged that day that God speaks.
We encourage you to seek how God is desiring to use you in someone else’s life, Here and Now.
